sketch of the day- tropical island

This is a sketch I did a couple of years ago, when I visited my daughter who was studying on the Caribbean Island of St. Vincent.

This is a sketch from many years ago when we spent some weeks in Hawaii with our children. We were mostly camping but every so often we would check into a hotel, wash off the sand and salt and sleep in clean sheets.  This sketch was done at one of our favourite places, The Hotel Manago, on the Big Island, just up country from Captain Cook. It is cheap and clean and in the garden in those days, the old grandmother of the Japanese family who ran the hotel, tended hundreds of plants, potted in old tins.

Sketch A Day

January always seems like a good time for quiet disciplines. Some years I have resolved to do a sketch a day. This year, since I am busy painting for a Small Works Show, here in my studio on Protection Island on March 12/13, I will comb through my sketch books and post sketches I have made in the past each day for the rest of the month.

Today's sketch is one I did almost exactly seven years ago, during a year that my husband and I were sailing. That year we left Victoria in our 40 foot sailboat "Circadia" in September on a trip that would take us to San Diego, Mexico, The Marquesas, Tuaomotos, Tahiti, and Hawaii, before returning home almost a year later. (You can read about the trip on my blog "Artist Adrift")

This sketch of the church tower in La Paz, was done with one of my favourite pens, a Pentel brush pen, and watercolour.
